Lyrics

[Verse 1]
From eighteen into twenty-five,
I let desire decide my life.
I chased the night and called it free,
Never looked past what I could see.

They drank, they laughed, they came around,
And I used every smile I found
To tell myself no harm was there—
But I was grown, and they were not.
That was my burden then to bear.

[Pre-Chorus]
I called it mutual, called it no strings,
Never stopped to weigh what morning brings.

[Chorus]
What I meant can’t undo what I did.
Good intentions cannot shelter someone from the consequence.
I never set out to leave a wound,
But harm does not need permission to move.
I can tell you what I thought back then—
It won’t make wrong become innocent.
I never meant the lives I touched to bend,
But what I meant can’t undo what I did.

[Verse 2]
Friday night became Monday’s friend,
A hug, a laugh, then out again.
They kept on living where I could see,
So I mistook familiar for injury-free.

I watched them choose somebody new
And used that lie to hide the truth:
That what looked ordinary in the light
Could leave a weight that surfaced years beyond that night.

[Pre-Chorus]
Pain doesn’t always show when it begins,
And silence is not evidence that no one carries it.

[Verse 3]
Years inside, I read her name—
Drug charges, prison, another chain.
My first thought rose to defend:
“She was on that road before we ever met.”

Then something broke through all my pride:
She may already have been on that slide,
But I had one chance to slow the fall—
Instead, I added grease and gave the smallest shove of all.

I cannot claim which turns were mine,
Or draw her whole life in one straight line.
But I know I did not help her climb,
And that knowledge has followed me through every year of time.

[Breakdown]
I was not the first wound.
I may not have been the worst.
But neither one absolves me
For the damage that was mine.

[Bridge]
A twenty-one-year sentence,
Nineteen years behind the wall.
But time can answer punishment—
It cannot answer all.

I have written words I haven’t sent,
Because sorrow does not buy consent.
I want to say I finally understand,
But remorse gives me no right to enter their lives again.

Maybe making amends means staying away.
Maybe it means becoming better every day.
No demand for forgiveness, no need to hear my name—
Just refusing to remain the man who caused that pain.

[Final Chorus]
What I meant can’t undo what I did.
No number of years can rewrite how somebody lived.
I never set out to leave a wound,
But intention doesn’t make the damage untrue.
I cannot change the man I was back then—
I can make sure he never lives through me again.
A better life is the debt I choose to give,
Because what I meant can’t undo what I did.

[Outro]
No excuse.
No demand to be forgiven.
Only truth,
And a different way of living.

What I meant
Can’t undo what I did.
